The pandemic changed the way we live and work in many ways. But perhaps none of those changes has been as game-changing and long-lasting as remote working. Many people were already working from home, but with most businesses suddenly having to support remote working, it was necessary to find a way of doing business that many hadn’t previously considered.
In the aftermath of the pandemic, the digital nomad is now a mainstay of the working world. This concept takes remote working to the extreme, enabling people to do the same job anywhere on the planet. Or, rather, anywhere that offers a digital nomad license.
Being at the forefront of new business and working models, Dubai’s digital nomad package is one of the world’s best. So, if you have the freedom to work anywhere, here’s why Dubai might be the best location for you.
Why Dubai is an ideal destination for digital nomads
Dubai is one of the most dynamic business destinations in the world. Its strategic location between East and West makes it perfect for global trade, while its time zone overlaps with most other business hubs around the world.
Naturally, this makes it a perfect location for digital nomads wishing to work remotely while maintaining business as usual.
Then there is the UAE’s famed tax environment. There is no personal tax out here, while corporate tax remains low at just 9% on profits over AED 375,000. The rate for profits under this threshold is once again zero.
Dubai’s infrastructure has also been built to support digital nomads. The emirate has a large and robust ecosystem of coworking hubs, SMBs, and startup support. Connectivity is also not an issue out here. The UAE boasts the fastest broadband anywhere in the Middle East.
There are many lifestyle benefits, too. Dubai regularly ranks among the safest places in the world, as well as having a high quality of life. With an expatriate population of almost 90%, digital nomads are welcomed and encouraged, making it easy to settle soon after relocation.
Dubai’s Digital Nomad License: Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for the Dubai Digital Nomad License will differ slightly depending on your circumstances. However, in all cases, you must have a passport valid for at least six months and suitable health insurance for your time in the UAE.
If you’re an employee, you’ll also need proof of employment, a contract valid for at least a year, and a statement that you earn at least USD 3,500 monthly. You may also be asked to submit a payslip and at least three months of bank statements.
As a business owner or entrepreneur, you will need to demonstrate proof of business ownership for at least one year and an average monthly income of USD 3,500. You may also need to provide three months of bank statements and proof that you have conducted remote work for your business.
As a digital nomad, you may also have the option to sponsor visas for family members. Once again, these additional applicants must have passports valid for at least six months and suitable health insurance.
How to apply for Dubai’s Digital Nomad License: Step-by-step
The first step when making any application in Dubai is to engage the services of a local expert. The team at Creative Zone can guide you through the entire Digital Nomad application process, advising on the most suitable path and liaising with all relevant authorities.
We’ll assist with every step of the following process:
Step 1: Registration
First, you’ll need to set up an account with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFAD). This can be done via its online portal. At this stage, you’ll be required to enter some personal details before you can proceed.
Step 2: Prepare documents
Next, you’ll need to assemble all relevant paperwork relating to your business or employment. As this is such a vital stage of your application, our team will help ensure everything is in order to avoid delays or possible rejection of your application.
Step 3: Submit documents
Having completed the online application form, you should submit it along with your supporting documents. You will be required to pay the application fee at this stage.
If you are already in the UAE, you have the option to make your application in person. This can be done at an AMER service centre. In this instance, you must visit the centre and personally submit your application and supporting documents.
Step 4: Receive your license and visa
Once your application is approved, you will receive your UAE Digital Nomad License and Visa. You are now free to live and work remotely in Dubai for up to a year. Should you wish to stay longer, the team at Creative Zone can advise on the most suitable way to reapply for a UAE residency visa.
